holly got me to join bebo.com. It’s… not evil. I was really impressed. A nice change from Friendster, which is truly awful (slow, ugly, bloated beast that it is). It’s an interesting idea, but, man, Friendster did not pull it off well. orkut is pretty nice, but, sadly, I never really put any effort into it and then, one day, everyone seemed to be using Friendster (Oh, sarah, why?).
But back to bebo. Both Friendster and orkut are about connections. Bebo is much simpler; it’s an address book first and foremost with a journal and a photo archive as secondary features. The idea is that you shouldn’t have to send out mass emails when you update your contact information (and shouldn’t have to deal with mass emails when someone else does). Everybody’s info is stored centrally and, as long as people keep their own information updated, is always up to date. It’s a nice idea, and it’s implemented really cleanly. Their privacy policy even seems pretty good.

Nope, no limitations. You can do global searches. It’s kind of funky because each school has its own domain space, but you can search and connect to all of the schools. Like all such sites, you can’t search until you’ve registered, but if you *do* register, just go to the “global” link at the top of the page, select the school you want to search at, or do a truly global search.
I thought it looked a bit scary, espcially when you read this clause:
“Acquisition. It is possible that as we continue to develop our website and our business, Bebo’s service and/or related assets might be acquired. Notwithstanding any provision in this policy to the contrary, in event of a merger or acquisition, your personal information may be transferred to the acquiring entity, and become subject to the acquirer’s data practices.”

reading your comments, have noticed that this is an easy way to pass information of who what where + pictures of schoolkids (you all mention schools as networks), whereas to say where your details could end up and who might tap in, any database such as this is readily hackable by peads, in this current climate, should you not be a tad careful, with “personal information”
clair: No service agreement can guarantee the future. It’s just not possible; it’d be a violation of causality. Find me a TOS or EULA or privacy policy that can guarantee it will never change. And I don’t mean, “We’re open source, nice people and we promise we will always do such and such.” I mean something legally binding. Once you find that, I’ll still be right, since the laws themselves can change.
If I give a friend of mine my phone number, she can give it to whomever she pleases; I can’t stop her. It’s the exact same thing with companies. You have to make a decision each time you’re faced with the situation; you can’t decide unilaterally. Sayin “No” to bebo because neither you nor they can predict the future is a something like saying “No” to anyone who ever asks for your phone number because you’re can never know for sure what he or she will do with it. Not that there aren’t good reasons for saying “No” to bebo.
paranoid: I don’t know where “schoolkids” came from. To me, that means minors (but could certainly mean something else to someone else). The comments above were ambiguous, but we were talking about universities. Regardless, of course, you should always be “a tad careful, with ‘personal information’”. But people can look up your address at the library, and they can take pictures of you on the street. At least what you put on a site like bebo is controlled by you.
I don’t even use the thing. I just think it’s a clever idea and seems pretty well implemented.

My apologies for the length of this:
For some reason, I’ve never believed in the possibility that a human could become proficient at typing a message like DaRnZ’s. I always suspect that there is a computer program translating normal language input into this output. Otherwise, how do you decide which letters to capitalize? Is the spelling completely arbitrary, or are there rules? There seem to be numerous approximations of the word “the”: tHa, ThA, da, dUr, dUr. Or is it some kind of stream of consciousness? Do you just spell a word however you feel like at the time, tapping the shift key every few letters?
It’s interesting to note that the writer claims that the “EaSt KoAsT” is “dUr ShIT” and then notice that words like “there” and “here” are spelled with phonetic attention to a northeastern US accent: “ThEa” and “heA”. There’s clear vocal influence behind this, even including such interjections (as I suppose them to be) as “YuR YuR” and “aY aY”.
For the most part, I also type much like I speak. And certain rules of writing are so entrenched within my mind that they manifest automatically. I don’t have to think about which letters to capitalize when I type. It’s possible that the reason for my incredulity is just that I’ve been so thoroughly programmed with a certain set of rules that I don’t see how it could be done any other way. It’s also possible, then, that DaRnZ has become so accustomed to typing in this style that it comes to him or her as naturally as the more traditional rules of informal grammar come to me.
We need to put together a study. Find some people proficient at typing like the above message. Give them a message to communicate to someone — have them watch a short video and then have them type a summary and send it to someone. Track typing speed and language depending upon who they think the message is going to — their friend in the waiting room, or someone with whom they might be more formal. Are they bilingual writers? I’d be interested in the results of that.

I must take exception to stace’s accusation that I’m “wasting the f***** page”. I do this on several grounds:
First, the idea of “wasting” the page implies that the page, itself, is a limited resource. I realize that it’s stored on a disk somewhere, but given the relatively small amount of space that text uses on disk, I hardly think this is much of a concern.
Second, given the abundance of comments that read, for example, “SUP NE HAMOZ N DA HOUSE…..”, I feel like a comment that provides a thought-provoking talking point is somewhat valuable, being of limited supply in this thread, of late.
Finally, I must object on the purely banal grounds that your message, stace, is severely lacking in correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation, not in the artful way that DaRnZ’s message flies in the face of these hallowed concepts, but in a way that indicates a rather mundane lack of understanding of the basic tenets of English composition.

School administrations may deem bebo “unsuitable” within the school environment, because the administration is there to ensure that that environment is an academic one first and foremost. Why should a school waste its resources providing access to an online socialization network when those resources could be used for what they were intended? Especially since a school is an incredibly social place already?
But those arguments are secondary and, indeed, fragile.
More to the point, Lana, if people such as several of those above continue to demonstrate reading comprehension skills on par with those of a five year old (as evidenced by the fact that these people believe my personal website is actually a corporate run, online social network), schools have an excellent excuse for blocking bebo.
